Tender Department = “Tension” Department

This week has been an unbelievable week for me!

I don’t think I’m the trainee in the company, I think I’m one of them in the company actually. In this week, they assign me in charge of tender or quotation of 3 projects!!

After receiving the tender drawing, I have to analyze all plan drawings and schematic diagram to understand all fire protection system the owner need. Then, I have to contact suppliers and ask for quotation. In the same time, I must make sure that I really know all the system well because when the supplier has any enquiry, I’m the one have to answer them!!

Being the freshman in this field, I really feel excited and it is tense in fact…

I have finished costing for one of the project in Shah Alam. Then, the other project of Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri, Malacca is hold because the consultant only send schematic diagram to us without plan drawings. I can’t do quotation and costing without plan drawings.

When I think I can rest for awhile, suddenly I receive another new project of condo in Setapak after lunch. I have to submit the tender drawing by next Tuesday!! How could I finish that in such short time?

I quickly fax all details of parts that I need quotation to all suppliers. Luckily, some of the suppliers reply very fast. For those have not replied, I have to call to ask for the quotation…all the costing and have to fill up the technical data some more, I haven’t started yet…I think I’ll work overtime before Tuesday.

Looking back on this week, not all sad things happen to me la…got some interesting story too! On Tuesday, the project director, Mr. Jeffery has asked me and Ming (another trainee) to follow him to go site in Kajang. That is a plastic factory already accomplished and starts to operate. Mr. Jeffery has shown us all fire protection system in that company which done by our company. That’s great to see all the real parts with my eyes…Since so many days looking on the drawing and do quotation; I really wish to see the real stuff.

After know how the real parts look like and how to operate, I have know better all the system. It helps me a lot in understanding the drawing and the pipeline.

All after all, I learned a lot. But there is still a long way to go now. Some of the people work at site may think that working in the office is great, but they don’t know the real situation. By using your eyes and brain to do all the costing and quotation, it is as tiring as drilling holes and doing construction work at site. Believe me!

Dark 13th

Last night, when the moon is hide and the road is full of raining water, my motor crashed with a car…

All I can remember is I saw car’s light towards me, and I was fell on the road. I was really feel scare, I try to wake up immediately. Luckily, I still can stand up by my own and all of my body parts still on my body!! My knee was injured and bleeding and one of my small legs injured too.

That car stopped at the front. I walked to the driver. I can’t blame him because that is my fault for not stopping at the road junction. But, that car’s speed was …wooooooosh!!! Super fast!! Drive so fast in that small road; I don’t know what is in that driver’s head!!

Somehow, on that time, I was very blank. I saw his car’s front light broken and got some obvious scratches on his car body. I have to pay him. He came to my face and asked:

“Your motor doesn’t have brake? Are you a student?”

I keep apologizing and said I’m a student. He then left without asking for the loss. But he has warned me that if I was hit by the front or side, I’m gone…

Last night was a long long night for me. I’m lucky. There must be someone or angel save me. I never thought that I could be so careless on the street. Life is so weak, you’ll lost it if you less care of it.

Appreciate your precious life, drive carefully on the street. Care about yourself and other road users. Life is only one, not more than that, just one. You are nobody in this world if you lost it.

Peace.

Let it be

Today, finally I can start work with fire protection drawing. It is much easier than the plumbing, I hate piping system now… The lady sit in front of my table quit listening to radio station since yesterday. She starts playing songs of her CDs. On yesterday, she played love songs all day long. It was like Valentine’s Day. Today, in the morning she starts playing oldies.

To my surprise, she plays Beatles “Let it be”. First of all, this is my all time favorite song. When I listen to this song, I always remember my physics teacher during lower six. He used to sing this song in physics class and it is his motto of life too!!

I believe that many will think “let it be” is a passive attitude in solving a problem or in someone’s life. We should find out the solution for every problem should not just let it be…

But, have u ever think that if u care so much for every little tiny thing in your daily life, how would you be? Everyday bothered by so many stuffs…No one likes this!

So, we should try to learn how to “let it be”. Sometimes, try to let the thing goes by its own way. It will make your life happier than ever.

The X-File Continues…

The story is continued from the “smelly” pantry…

This morning, when I first opened the office door, OH GOSH!! What is the sh*t smell!! The funny smell yesterday becomes worse!!

Everyone in the office cannot concentrate on works, all feel dizzy, headache n start talking insanely…My nose today is normal already and feel the same way as “normal” person. Everyone is waiting for the “expert” to come and find out what is hiding somewhere…

Wait n wait…

Until 11am, the “angels” finally come…they open the ceiling cover and straightly go to the washroom and climb up to the ceiling…guess what they found?

A DEAD MOUSE!!

That’s true!! There is a dead body of mouse beside the water tank with its stomach opened!

Thought that everything is settled but when we go to wash hand at the washroom…the weird smell is on our hand!!

Is it one or more dead mouse in the water tank?

We keep asking the expert to go to check but they said the smell will not disappear so fast. We have to wait until tomorrow and see.

The case still is an X-file, no one can solve it by now…I hope this case can be closed tomorrow because the environment in the office become very strange!Everyone wants to know is it something inside the water tank??

Industrial Project

This sem the most unforgettable thing undoubtedly is our industrial project!! It only carries 3 credit hours but it took much more time we can really expected!! Almost everyday I'm doing, discussing and even dreaming of industrial project!!=(

Seems like it is a nightmare but somehow after all I really learn a lot from that...

My group is developing automated bathroom tile scrubber which can operate all cleaning in one pass without human intervention. It is a very good idea but we have no enough time to really analyze all the functions included and cannot build the real prototype.

My Cute Working Model

I really wanna thanks all the group members here. They are Siew Chen, Shin Ling, Nadia, Hafiz and Hanif. We are not really expert in this quite high tech stuff, but all of group members are really committed. Thanks you!!
I'm working with drilling machine

Funny Printer Repair + “smelly” Pantry

Today want to share two interesting stories in my office.

1. Funny Printer Repair

In the morning, I thought that my day will be digging into the drawing again. However, an incident happens! The Samsung laser printer at my side is suddenly not functioning. The office girl cannot print her stuff. Here I come… Now I can be a manufacturing engineer and can apply the course I took – Design for Assembly!!

First, I try to disassembly the printer and found that one paper stuck inside. This printer is not a good design because it is hard to disassembly and uses too many fasteners (screws)!! But what is good is it used same size and length screws. So happy because can apply what I learned…haha…

After taking out the paper, I carefully do assembly all the parts. Then I push “ON” button…it shows ERROR signal!! I checked all the connecting cable and reinstall the printer, it still not functioning. I feel so shameful…I worked on it until lunch and this problem still on my head!!

After lunch, my Filipino “teacher” suddenly shouting

“What is that?” with her finger pointing at the table at my back.

SHIT!!! That is the toner of the printer!! No wonder the printer is damn not functioning…I install it back to the position and it is done!! What a funny experience!!

Ok…take a short break before my second story…

I forgot to introduce my lovely Filipino “teacher”. She has a very high class name --- Beverly. Ms. Beverly is originally from Philippines and has a 20 years old son.

2. “Smelly” Pantry

This story is related to Ms. Beverly too. After lunch, Ms. Beverly keep complaining about the pantry has weird smell. She is so confirm that is the smell of DEAD MOUSE. But everyone in the office not smells anything. Today I have bad 感冒,so I hardly smell something weird…

Since Ms. Beverly really cannot “tahan” and keep shouting around, the project director, Mr. Jeffery gives me and Min one big torchlight and ask us to check where is the smell come out. (Min is another trainee)

After check on all the floor and cabinet, nothing is found. Then, we open up the ceiling cover…the “funny” smell suddenly comes out!! We quickly use torchlight to seek inside, but still…found nothing!!

Now confirm that “something” is on the ceiling or even in the water tank!!! Tomorrow there will be an expert come to check. If found “something” in water tank, all of us must go for injection!! Because our drinking water come from…

There is a misery left today…The truth will be revealed tomorrow!!

Raining Man + Half Professional Quantity Surveyor

Today wake up at 6.55am, sky is dark, rain is singing… I hate this, I only have small motor, motorists hate the most is raining when he wanna go out!

After long waiting breakfast, 8.15am, see the rain becomes lighter, so rushing out of my home heading my company. However, when through UM, the rain suddenly become heavy!! There is no way going back, so hv to keep going with my motor…the feeling, how to said…just like a man in raining!! What is cool is many motorists join me!!haha! so poor…

Arrive at office at sharp 8.30am. Guess what? There is only auntie cleaner came and the door still locked…wait until 9am, there is a guy came to open the door. And not surprisingly, we are the 1st come to tender dept today.

Mr. Lai comes at 10am and gives me all tender drawing of project of Castle Inn Hotel in Johor. All day long I’m doing identification of quantity of different part in cold water service. There are 26 floors in that hotel and have to calculate all parts for every floor…

Then, I have been asked to measure the length of hot water and cold water pipes…You know in the drawing, all the pipes are shown in line, the thickest line is 0.5mm (the thickness of line depends on diameter of pipe used)…imagine those thinner pipe and the lines…I hate piping system!! It makes my eyes almost POP OUT!!! So tired…

Today I can considered as half professional Quantity Surveyor liao…later when i know all the costing stuff, may b I can become a QS!!

Since my Filipino “teacher” and I are so busy today, so today no Filipino class…I hope can continue tomoro!!

Quantity surveyor + Filipino

So fast, my training comes to second day. For sure I expect it to be more interesting than 1st day la…haha…

Today I straightly go to tender department where do costing and tender for project. 3 of us are the 1st people come for this dept… first, reading the drawing for sanitary plumbing service as Mr. Lai asked to do yesterday. Then, continues read drawing for cold and hot water service and also tender document.

All of this stuff actually is work for a quantity surveyor. Today I luckily switch my position from engineer to quantity surveyor! I analyze all the costing for tender. That document really thick and it makes me so sleeeeeeepy …I dun remember how many times I accidentally close my eyes!!

The biggest thing I get today is learning Filipino!! There are two ladies from Philippines working at this dept. I sure won’t let go the chance to learn bahasa Filipina!! Hehe…actually Filipino very similar to Spanish, only few words are different. Spanish is second language in Philippines.

Erm…teach u guys some words I learned today la…

Good morning --- maganda umaga

How are you --- Kumus taka

I’m fine --- Mah buti

What is your name? --- Ano pangalan mo?

My name is Boon Teong --- Ang pangalan ho ay Boon Teong.

How old are you? --- Ilang taon hama.

Yes --- oh oh (that’s true, no joke…but that’s funny!)

No --- ah yao

You’re beautiful --- maganda ka

And…

I LOVE YOU --- Mahar kita

“selamat”… means thanks you la!!

Very funny actually…bcoz some of the malay words in Filipino has different meaning….like “sayang” means “bad thing” in Filipino!!

That’s all for today la…I afraid I’ll become translator for Filipino if I continues working at that dept!!haha! =)

Feel tired even like do nothing…but very happy because can learn new thing!! Hope everyday is a new day and there are new things for me to learn! Good luck to me and you all!

First day training as an ENGINEER

Today is a very important day for my life…1st day official training as an engineer!!

For sure this is not my 1st time work la…but work as in my profession, Engineer, this is very first time!! First time always excited and unforgettable…hehe!

8am I go to work by my old Honda EX 5, drive through Federal Highway which is super jam with all cars only 1-2 people inside…that’s called KL.

8.30am sign in. The secretary gives all 3 of the trainees their company profile. I hardly believe that…this company very small from its outlook, but the number of the project they handle and the cost…wooooosh!!

Then I’ve been introduced to HR and my supervisor who is one of the senior engineer, Mr. Tan, super serious guy…Then, nth to do…we jz sit there n start talking nonsense…

Suddenly, one voice comes from behind:

“Cheah, let’s go to site now!!”

OMG, Mr. Tan is calling me…I quickly grab my bag n follow him. We are heading to Australia High Commission which is located at Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, near Jalan Ampang n KLCC. The building there is doing midlife upgrade and refurbishment. My company is contractor in charge of fire protection system and plumbing.

In the car, very unexpected…Mr. Tan who is starts to talk!! He ask bout my uni and kl life…blablabla…He is from Penang too!! We keep talking in Penang topic for almost half an hour…but still not reached there bcoz trapped in traffic jam again…
Finally reach there but he tried to find the cheapest parking lot but impossible la…KLCC area where got cheap parking lot 1. No choice, choose a RM 5 per entry 1, consider very cheap liao.

This is actually my first time visit a site with engineer. When arrived there, so many contractor and engineers there. This Australia High Commission super strict, they dun allow ppl to go in easily. All contractors must go in with project manager, how many ppl go in must go out together…and again must be accompanied by project manager!! PM only hv 1, so keep waiting there…waiting n waiting until stomach start yelling hungry…

Then, I have lunch with 4 other engineers. First they feel headache where to find a cheaper lunch bcoz in KLCC area very hard to find low cost place to eat. Walking …walking then they enters Restoran Kepala Ikan Kampung Pandan. Seems like a very famous restaurant…

Eating with engineers is interesting. For sure, very soon we are talking about engineer’s life. Since I’m the trainee, they starts sharing their engineer’s experience. One of them, Mr. S suddenly tells me:

“I hope it is not too late to give u this advice…Don’t be the engineer if u want better life!!”

Then he starts told me all his hard experience as engineer and he is my super super senior in UM!! He was taking electrical engineering…his conclusion is engineer jz the labour with slight higher paid and higher knowledge!

More interesting is when we wanna pay the bill…guess how much? RM 120!!!! That so called very famous fish head costs RM 50!! This area really…if nth important or no one gonna pay for me, I’ll never come here for any FOOD!!

Go back to the site…Mr. Tan is going into the company (finally…) to check the location of sprinklers and valve…But I’m not in the registration list, so I can’t go in…Mr. Tan asked me to go walk walk then meet him at 3pm.

Guess what!! Go where? Sure KLCC la!! Haha…i ever tot that can go shopping during working... walking in suria KLCC with formal wear jz like ppl working arounf here oso is my 1st time. Promoter there very nice n keep smiling…it proved again wearing n appearance is very important!! If u wear t-shirt n short pants walking there, no one will greet u, unless u r white man!!

Go back to office at 3pm…sitting there n nth to do again…then the managing director, Mr. V called 3 of us go into his room. Mr. V is another engineer and he is a Fire Engineer!! Yup, that’s rite, he is Fire Engineer!! To b honest, I never heard bout this type of engineer b4… according to him, only two professional fire engineer in Klang Valley n KL, he is one of them!! Then he keep explain bout this company again n give 3 reference books for us to further understanding in fire protection!! Hv to read book again…tot that can escape from book…

Finally, the company’s CEO asked us to go to tender department to understand the drawing 1st. I stay at tender dept listen to all drawing stuff until 5.45pm then go home.

That’s my first day. Seems nothing but it means a lot! Engineer’s life is brand new for me n I din understand it though. I met so many engineers today…am I going to be one of them in future? It’s still unsure!

In fact, this company’s job scope is quite far different from what I learning in lecture. But, it is a great chance for me to learn. I hope that throughout these two months, I can decide what I’ll b going to take for my future.
